And Your Child Is Heading Off To College…

imagesAs your child is getting ready to go to college, you want to help, but you’re not sure how. There are ways to stay involved while giving your child their personal space and the freedom to prepare themselves. Consider these ideas:

  • Have a conversation with your child about freshman classes— what they’re interested in as well as requirements. Look through the course offerings with them, if they need help.
  • Explore your tuition payment options— their are many programs, including SallieMae, available to help spread out tuition requirements.
  • Understand whether your health insurance covers your child at college. Decide if you want to opt out of the school’s coverage and how to do so before the deadline.
  • If you’re student is going away to college, help them get ready for their dorm move-in. Many stores offer helpful shopping checklists. Take inventory of what you already own and also what a roommate may be bringing for their shared space.
  • Plan your child’s move-in logistics. Some schools assign specific move-in times to their students. Make hotel reservations if you’ll be staying over. You may even want to consider making dinner reservations since this is one of the busiest weekends on campus and the surrounding community.
  • Check the school’s move-in schedule for any parent events you may be interested in attending.
  • Make reservations for Fall or Homecoming weekend. This is probably the second busiest weekend at school.

For any parent this is a bittersweet time so stay focused on what an amazing growing experience this will be for your child and you. While they’re preparing for college you can be preparing yourself and supporting them through this next big step as well.
